Timpanogos Storytelling had its beginnings in 1990 with a fall storytelling festival -- a fundraiser for a new children’s library in Orem.  Eight hundred sixty attended that inaugural event where a handful of the nation’s best storytellers performed.  Now entering its 22nd year, Timpanogos Storytelling Institute still partners with the Library, and together they present a weeklong fall event which brings dozens of the nation’s best professional tellers to Utah, as well as visitors from across the country and around the globe; a two week midwinter conference; a school outreach program which brings workshops and performances into area schools; and weeklong artist residencies in which participants learn to write and tell their own stories.  Today almost 50,000 attend Timpanogos Storytelling events each year.

  • Recipient of the Governor’s Award for the Performing Arts 2009, Timpanogos Storytelling is a leader in the nation in preserving and promoting the traditional art of storytelling.
  • It presents the finest and most expansive youth teller training program in the country and has been designated as the home of the National Youth Storyteller Showcase by the National Storytelling Network.
  • Timpanogos Storytelling continues to expand its nationwide reach.  Recent alliances have been formed with the Afro-American Genealogical Society to assist them in preserving their stories, and with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in their initiative to promote improved science education through the use of story in the classroom.
  • Supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Education, National Endowment for the Arts, Utah Arts Council, and Utah Humanities Council, Timpanogos Storytelling engages an entire city; almost 7,000 community volunteer hours are enlisted in presenting events each year.
"If you haven't been to the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival, you're missing one of the great treasures of life." ~Ibby Moultrie, Festival attendee from Florida
